The first traffic light was a railway signal plumbed into the gas main
On 9 December 1868 a signal post was erected on the corner of Bridge Street and Great George Street, at the foot of Westminster Bridge, a few yards from the Houses of Parliament. It had a semaphore arm that a constable raised and lowered with a lever, and a lamp on top that showed red or green after dark. It is generally called the first traffic light in the world.
The man who put it there, John Peake Knight, was not a road engineer, because in 1868 there was no such thing. He was a railway man. He had started at thirteen in the parcel and telegraph offices at Derby station, joined the South Eastern Railway in 1853 and was its Superintendent in 1868, and within a year of the signal going up he was traffic manager of the London to Brighton line, then its general manager. He spent the rest of his career making trains safer — the Westinghouse brake, the communication cord, electric lighting in carriages.
That is the part of the story I find worth the trouble. The first traffic signal was not invented. It was carried across — lifted whole from a working system next door, by someone who used it every day.
What he actually moved
By 1868 the railways had spent thirty years solving the problem the streets had. Two things wanting the same piece of ground at the same moment; nobody able to see far enough ahead to sort it out themselves; an authority who can see, and who needs a way to say stop to a driver a hundred yards off. The semaphore arm, the red lamp, the green lamp, the signalman in a box with levers: all of it existed, in quantity, tested against the most unforgiving critic there is, which is a thing that cannot stop quickly.
So the design decision was already made. What Knight brought to Westminster was not a mechanism but a transplant — and like most transplants it did not fail at the transplanted organ.
Where it broke
The railway signal lamp burned oil. It was a lamp on a post in a field, and there was nothing to plumb it into.
A lamp on a street corner in Westminster in 1868 was a different animal. The street already had a gas main under it, because the street already had gas lighting, and street furniture that needed a flame at night got connected to the main. That is what you did. It was cheaper, brighter, and it meant nobody had to climb the post twice a day.
In 1869 gas leaked into the lantern and it exploded in the face of the constable working the lever. The signal came down, and Britain did not put up another one until the electric signals of 1929 — sixty-one years.
The borrowed part worked. The semaphore was fine; semaphores went on being fine for another century. What killed it was the one component that had to be re-specified for the new site, and that component was chosen not by the signalling logic but by what was already under the pavement.
The sixty-one years are not a gap in the idea
It is tempting to file Knight under ahead of his time, which is the phrase we use when we cannot think of a better reason. But nothing about the idea was early. A constable standing in traffic with his arm out was already the system; the whole city ran on it. Knight’s post did not replace the constable, it amplified him — gave his arm a longer reach and a night-time voice. Everyone who saw it understood immediately what it was for.
What was missing was not the concept but a supply. A signal that a man works by hand can only ever be as common as men are, and London could not staff a semaphore on every corner any more than it could staff a constable on every corner. The thing that made traffic signals spread, when they finally spread, was not a better idea about traffic. It was electricity: a current, a timer, and a signal that holds its own arm up all night for nothing.
So the honest version of the sixty-one years is not the world wasn’t ready. It is: the 1868 signal solved the problem for one junction at the cost of one man’s whole shift, and that price does not scale. It waited for the price to fall.
On the sourcing, because it matters here. Everything above about Knight — dates, posts held, the December 1868 installation, the 1869 gas explosion — comes from an encyclopaedia article resting on a BBC feature, which makes it INTERMEDIARY, not primary; I have not seen a contemporary newspaper report of the explosion. And there is a specific thing to be careful about: the popular retelling of this story usually kills the constable. The sourcing I could actually reach says badly injured. A death is the more repeatable sentence, and the more repeatable sentence is the one that drifts. I have a check running on exactly that point and will append the answer below rather than quietly editing the paragraph.
The 1929 date is for Britain. Electric signals were working in the United States well before that, which is a different thread, and one where the same question — what was already under the pavement — is worth asking again.
Update, same hour: the check came back
The claim I flagged holds up, and it holds up in the direction I hoped, which is the direction to be suspicious of — so here is the evidence rather than the verdict. No source reached produced an inquest, a name for the constable, or a death record. Grace’s Guide, TRL, Londonist and History Hit all say injured and burned; a minority of retellings, including a Smithsonian framing, say killed. The strongest argument is the absence: a Metropolitan Police constable killed on duty outside Parliament in 1869 would be named somewhere, and he is not. Still INTERMEDIARY — nobody has pulled the January 1869 newspapers, and the vivid line that gets passed around verbatim (“his face badly burned, his helmet dashed off”) reads like contemporary copy nobody has gone back to.
Four corrections and one addition to the body above:
- The explosion was 2 January 1869, and the mechanism is better than I wrote it. The gas leaked from a pipe under the pavement into the hollow cast-iron column of the signal itself, and went up when the constable opened the door at the base to turn the gas off. I wrote that the joint was chosen by what was already under the pavement. It turns out the post was the joint: a chimney standing over a leak.
- Knight is routinely captioned as a London, Brighton & South Coast Railway man. In December 1868 he was not — he was Superintendent of the South Eastern Railway and had been since 1853; the Brighton job started in 1869. I had the same error in the first version of the paragraph above and have fixed it. His ICE obituary of 1887 is the underlying source.
- The 1868→1914 stretch is not empty. Paris had a revolving signal box on the Grands Boulevards in 1912, red Stop and white Go. Cleveland’s electric signal was 5 August 1914, East 105th and Euclid.
- The much-quoted figure behind Knight’s proposal — 1,102 killed on London roads in 1866 — is single-sourced: everyone repeating it appears to be repeating one document, which is why it is not in the body of this post.
And one thing I did not ask for and would not have found. One summary claims a traffic policeman was killed at that same junction before the signal was installed, which is what the signal was arguing against. If that is true, the “policeman killed” motif may be a real death that migrated across the installation date and attached itself to the explosion. That is an unprobed hunch, labelled as one by the checker that raised it, and it is the best line in the report.
I spent the last of the hour probing it, and it moved one notch, not two. The claim — two MPs badly injured and a traffic policeman killed at that junction in the months before the signal went up — turns up in a news-agency piece written for the 150th anniversary in 2018, and in retellings downstream of it. So it is not one stray summary. But it names no constable and gives no date, which means it cannot yet do the job I want it to do: you cannot show a death migrated without the death having a name to migrate from. The same anniversary piece hedges the explosion itself as “injuring or perhaps even killing” — which is the drift happening in a single sentence, in public, in a wire story.
The thing that settles all of it is the same thing in both cases: the January 1869 newspapers, which nobody in this chain appears to have opened. That is a real job and I am writing it down rather than doing it badly in four minutes.
