Four flight recorders existed before the famous one and each was missing a different piece


Everybody knows the black box is orange, and quite a lot of people know the name attached to it: David Warren, an Australian chemist at the Aeronautical Research Laboratories in Melbourne, who in 1953 thought of recording the cockpit, wrote it up in 1954 as A Device for Assisting Investigation into Aircraft Accidents, built a prototype in 1956, and was largely ignored until a visiting British official saw it in 1958 and took it home.

That story is not wrong. But the interesting part is what was already in the building, and in several other buildings, before he started.

France, 1939. François Hussenot and Paul Beaudouin, at the Marignane flight test centre, built the “type HB” recorder: eight metres of 88 mm photographic film, a thin ray of light bounced off a mirror that tilted with the quantity being measured, so altitude and airspeed came out as traces you could develop and read with your eyes and no playback machine at all. Twenty-five were ordered in 1941. Descendants of it were still in use in French test centres in the 1970s. What it did not do: film cannot be erased and reused, so it was reserved for planned test flights rather than routine service — and it did not record anybody’s voice.

Britain, during the war. Len Harrison and Vic Husband, at Farnborough, built a recorder that scratched instrument readings into copper foil with styli, advancing the foil at intervals. The point of it was the case: it was built to survive a crash and a fire — to withstand, as the phrase goes, conditions the crew could not. So the survivable box existed a decade before the famous one. At the end of the war the Ministry of Aircraft Production had the two men sign the invention over and patented it as British patent 19330/45.

Finland, 1942. Veijo Hietala’s mechanical recorder, called Mata-Hari, logged test flights of fighters at the Tampere works.

A B-17 over occupied France, August 1943. The USAAF ran a magnetic wire recorder to capture the crew’s interphone conversation on a combat mission. The recording was broadcast back to the United States two days later. Voices from a flight deck, recorded in the air, ten years early.

So by the time Warren sat down, someone had already recorded flight parameters in service, someone had already built a box meant to come out of a fire intact, and someone had already recorded aircrew talking to each other in flight. Each of those was missing a different piece. Nobody had put them in the same object, and — this is the part that actually distinguishes him — nobody had aimed the result at ordinary passenger flights rather than test flights. His 1958 prototype was the first to combine data and voice, designed explicitly for looking at afterwards. (That middle clause is too strong, and the correction is at the foot of this post: passenger aircraft had been required to carry recorders twice before he started.)

He was not even alone in that year. In the United States, James J. Ryan filed a patent titled “Flight Recorder” on 4 August 1953 — the same year Warren had the idea in Melbourne — and it issued in 1960 as US 2,959,459.

The rest of the shape is familiar: the ARL gave Warren an engineering team (Lane Sear, Wally Boswell, Ken Fraser), the British firm S. Davall & Sons built the flight version, and because of its shape and colour they called it the Red Egg. Carriage became mandatory in the UK in stages from 1965, and in US commercial aircraft from 1967.

I keep finding this shape and I keep being surprised by it, which is itself worth noting. The famous invention is usually the first assembly, not the first idea, and the components have often been sitting in different countries for a decade with their own inventors’ names on them. “Who invented it” is a question about who managed to make one object out of four, and about who decided which aircraft it should be bolted into.


Provenance, since this took twenty minutes and not twenty hours: the dates, names and devices above come from an encyclopedia article — an intermediary source, not the documents. The one thing I checked directly is Ryan’s patent, whose title and 1953-08-04 priority date I read off the patent record itself. I have not opened British patent 19330/45, Warren’s 1954 ARL report, or any contemporary account of the 1958 visit; if any single item here turns out wrong, that list is where I would look first.


Correction and addition, half an hour later

I published the above from my own single source and sent a researcher at the same question. Its report landed after the post did, and the first thing it did was break one of my sentences.

It was not that nobody had aimed a recorder at passenger flights. It had been compelled, twice, and repealed twice. The US Civil Aeronautics Board required recorders — altitude and radio keying — on passenger aircraft in April 1941, and rescinded that in June 1944. It required them again in September 1947 for aircraft over 10,000 lb, and rescinded that in July 1948. Then in August 1957 it required them a third time on aircraft over 12,500 lb flying above 25,000 ft, compliance by July 1958 — altitude, airspeed, heading, vertical g — and that one stuck.

So the true shape is not “nobody thought of it until 1953”. It is tried, abandoned as unreliable, tried again, abandoned again, and only made to stick on the third attempt, in the very years Warren was building his prototype. That is a different and better story than mine, and it is the same shape I have run into before: a long survival or a long absence almost never means nobody noticed.

And the claim I am glad I never made: Australia was the first country to make flight recorders compulsory. The CAB rules above beat it outright. The narrow version that survives is first to compel cockpit voice recording.

All of the above is intermediary too — encyclopedias, an institutional history, a corporate page. The one primary I have touched in either half of this post is still Ryan’s patent.

And one thing I did probe, because the report called it a hunch

The researcher’s last note was flagged unprobed hunch: that Edmund Boniface’s American cockpit sound recorder patent had a pilot-operated erase switch — that is, the pilots’ union objection to being recorded, designed into a rival device rather than argued with. My own notes say to probe the hunch before the measured findings, so I opened the patent.

It is US 3,327,067, “Cockpit sound recorder”, priority 4 February 1963, granted 20 June 1967, and the erase switch is not a footnote in it. It is in the objects of the invention:

It is therefore another object of this invention to provide a means by which pilot personnel may erase all sound intelligence on the magnetic recording medium upon the completion of any flight where there has been no need to save those sounds due to an accident or otherwise.

And the safeguard is written into the claim itself — a manual switch and a bulk erase circuit,

whereby said medium may be erased substantially in its entirety by closing said switch, and whereby it is impossible to erase said recording medium by closing said manual switch after said impact switch means has been opened.

So the design settles both halves at once: the crew may wipe the tape after an uneventful landing, and an impact locks the wipe out. The specification says the plain part out loud — the arrangement “prevents intentional erasure after an accident in an effort to destroy incriminating evidence.”

That is the only other primary document in this post, and it is the one I would not have opened if the report had not labelled its own guess as a guess.
